Capstone Year

Chittenden’s Lockhouse Study, 2025. During our winter trip to Seattle for Christopher Domin’s Metaphysics of Light capstone, we visited the Marium Chittenden Locks in Ballard, where I became captivated by the Beaux-Arts lockhouses and infrastructure made entirely from the same concrete as the locks themselves. These structures, built nearly 80 years before the rise of brutalism, displayed a powerful combination of raw materiality and refined detailing in brass, wood, and moss-covered surfaces. I studied the film photographs I took on site and created a 3D reconstruction in Rhino to analyze their proportions and constructability. This process became a key influence on the formal and material development of my final capstone project.
